Facts about mental illness in diverse populations:

  • In 2022, multiracial adults in the U.S. had the highest prevalence of experiencing any mental illness in the last year, with 35.2%, compared to rates of 24.6% for White, 21.4% for Hispanic, 19.7% for Black, 19.6% for American Indian or Alaska Native, and 16.8% for Asian adults.
  • 93.5% of adults with a substance abuse disorder did not receive treatment in the past year (2022).
  • Non-Hispanic Black adults had the highest rate of mental health-related emergency department (ED) visits, with 96.8 visits per 1,000 adults, followed by non-Hispanic White adults (53.4) and Hispanic adults (36.0).
